What we work on

Governance

Somaliland has built functioning democratic institutions largely without external support — our governance work examines constitutional design, rule of law, and the deepening of representative democracy. We track legislative reform, local government capacity, and anti-corruption measures that determine the resilience of the state.

Foreign Affairs

Three decades after self-declaration, Somaliland's pursuit of international recognition remains the defining diplomatic challenge of the republic. SL-SAG analyses bilateral relationships, AU and UN engagement strategies, and the geopolitical shifts — from Gulf state investment to great-power competition in the Red Sea — that shape Somaliland's path to sovereign status.

Security

Stability in Somaliland is hard-won and must be actively maintained in a neighbourhood marked by state fragility, maritime insecurity, and cross-border conflict. Our security analysis covers civil-military relations, border management, counter-terrorism cooperation, and the strategic importance of the port of Berbera to Horn of Africa logistics.

Economy & Development

From the expansion of Berbera port under DP World to livestock-export reform and fintech adoption, Somaliland's economy is diversifying despite the access barriers that unrecognised status creates. SL-SAG examines macroeconomic policy, trade corridors, infrastructure investment, and the conditions needed to attract diaspora capital and development finance.

Diaspora

The Somaliland diaspora — concentrated in the UK, Scandinavia, Canada, and the Gulf — is both the republic's primary source of remittance income and an increasingly organised political constituency. Our diaspora research explores transnational civic engagement, investment facilitation, identity politics, and how diaspora expertise can be channelled into institution-building at home.
