Meet the advisors and analysts that make up SL-SAG — scholars, diplomats, and practitioners working on Somaliland's future.
Strategic Studies
Dr. Egal's work sits at the intersection of economic geography and security studies, with a particular focus on the Berbera corridor, Red Sea trade routes, and the strategic competition between regional powers for influence in Somaliland. He is a visiting fellow at a leading Horn of Africa research institute.
Senior Advisor, Foreign Affairs
Dr. Ahmed is a former diplomat with extensive experience in AU and UN multilateral forums, specialising in small-state recognition diplomacy and the Horn of Africa's shifting security architecture. She holds a doctorate in International Relations from the University of Nairobi and has advised several East African governments on treaty negotiations.
Chair, Governance Reform
Dr. Hassan led the comparative constitutional review process for Somaliland's 2022 legislative agenda and publishes widely on sub-national governance and decentralisation in post-conflict societies. His current research focuses on customary law's role in sustaining state legitimacy in the absence of international recognition.
Diaspora & Civil Society
Amina coordinates SL-SAG's engagement with Somaliland diaspora networks in Europe and North America, focusing on civic technology, remittance formalisation, and cross-border policy advocacy. She previously directed a UK-based NGO supporting civil society capacity-building in the Horn of Africa.
